My name is Nicolò Degiorgis and I grew up between Trentino-South Tyrol in Italy and Canton of Ticino in Switzerland.

I completed my BA in 'Languages and Economic and Juridical Institutions of East Asia' at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, graduating in 2008 with a thesis titled “The Oil Road” about the aggressive expansion of Han Chinese in the Autonomous Region of Xinjiang in north-west of China.

During my studies I completed an internship for a trading company in Hong Kong, studied for one semester as exchange student at the Capital Normal University of Beijing and interned as producer at Magnum Photos in Paris.

In 2008 I was awarded a Fabrica fellowship, Benetton’s communication research centre in Treviso (I), where I produced Oasis Hotel. The book documents the life of the people along the Cross-Desert Highway in the Taklamakan Desert in China.

In 2009 I was admitted as Visiting Researcher at the Department of Political and Social Sciences of the University of Trieste while completing a one year residency at the art foundation Bevilacqua La Masa in Venice.

In the meantime I had started mapping and documenting Islamic makeshift places of worship in the North-East of Italy, a project which will later result in the book Hidden Islam.

From 2010 to 2011 I engaged in a period of photographic assignments for international magazines documenting various social and political events, from cowboys in the alps to the aftermath of the Arab Spring in Tunesia.

From 2014 til 2018 I taught photography at the Faculty of Arts and Design of the Free University of Bolzano, in the Penitential Institution of Bolzano and guest-lectured in various Italian and international universities and institutions.

In 2017 I was invited by Museion, the modern and contemporary art museum of Bolzano, to curate the show Hämatli & Patriæ on migration, identity and nationalism and in 2018 as a publisher in residence at Rijksakademie in Amsterdam.

My books are published by Rorhof while my works can be found on Italian Area.
